This March, we pit 64 Beatles covers against each other in what we call Moptop Madness.

Yesterday’s winners: Johnny Cash, “In My Life” and Nick Cave, “Let It Be”

It’s a battle of loud versus soft, dissonant versus harmonious today. Junior Campbell’s light-hearted “Drive My Car” faces Siouxsie and the Banshees’ gothic “Helter Skelter.” Then, Deerhoof’s spastic “The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill” meets Elliott Smith’s smooth “Because.”

Listen to each pairing below, then vote for your favorite. For added sway, try to convince others to vote your way in the comments. Voting closes in 24 hours.

  1. I so disagree with Elliot Smith winning, He’s copying them, I’d rather listen to the original. Deerhoof at least has the guts to do an original interpretation.

  2. I didn’t like either of the first two choices, really, but I was able to listen through Junior Campbell’s cover and couldn’t do so with Siouxie and the Banshees, so, beep-beep beep-beep, yeah.

With the other pair, Deerhoof didn’t even have the lyrics right, so that was an automatic lose for me, but I was already heavily leaning toward Elliott Smith anyway, since he’s got one of only VERY few Beatles covers that actually surpass the original. The fact that he keeps it purely vocal for longer and substituted piano where they had an organ with occasional sitar-ish guitar licks… I feel he upped the emotional intensity significantly. It ends a little abruptly, but I’m assuming that on the album it comes from it allows the audio to drop directly into whatever the next song is, so it really works.
