This March, we pit 64 Beatles covers against each other in what we call Moptop Madness.

Yesterday’s winners: Jake Shimabukuro, “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” and Neil Young, “A Day in the Life”

Four more from our Sweet 16 match up today. First, two statesmen go head to head as Johnny Cash’s “In My Life” challenges Wilson Pickett’s “Hey Jude.” Then, old-school indie favorites Elliott Smith and the Breeders face off with “Because” and “Happiness Is a Warm Gun.”

  1. Wilson Pickett and the Breeders simply have the more exciting covers here to me. I see that I’m in the slight minority, but I’m hopeful that it can pick up steam and we can see those songs overtake the others.

  2. Gimme Cash anytime!
“Because” is just too bland a cover, so it’s a warm gun for me! (oo-err).

  3. Cash, Breeders, Smith do fantastic covers. Pickett makes Hey Jude his bitch. It’s better than the original. I said it.

  4. I like Johnny Cash’s version, but it’s too like the original. Wilson Pickett’s Jude is more his own than Paul McC. Both Elliot Smith and the Breeders are way too close to the original. Breeders marginally better for giving a tone consistent with the lyrics, but this loses Lennon’s original irony.
