This March, we pit 64 Beatles covers against each other in what we call Moptop Madness.

Yesterday’s winners: Joe Cocker, “With a Little Help From My Friends” and José Feliciano, “A Day in the Life”

Today begins the Sweet 16. Sixty-four covers entered. Sixteen remain. Only one will win. Two more covers will be eliminated right here, right now. Will David Bowie’s “Across the Universe” or the Black Keys’ “She Said She Said” prevail? Will Al Green’s “I Want to Hold Your Hand” or Booker T. and the M.G.s’ “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” advance? You decide.

Listen to each pairing below, then vote for your favorite. For added sway, try to convince others to vote your way in the comments. Voting closes in 24 hours.

  1. Finally I think we’ll see this spectacularly mediocre Bowie cover fall. He’s got MUCH better covers, and this really fails to live up to his standards in general. Meanwhile, the Black Keys really get what “She Said She Said” is all about.

The other vote was easy for me choose my selection as well. Booker T. simply led his band through a much tighter cover than Al Green’s admittedly great take on “I Want to Hold Your Hand”.
