This March, we pit 64 Beatles covers against each other in what we call Moptop Madness.

Yesterday’s winners: John Tams, “Girl” & Ben Folds, “Golden Slumbers”

Today’s first match pits D.B. against B.D., as David Bowie faces off with oddball cover band Big Daddy. In the second half the double-header, a couple veterans go head-to-head when Booker T. and the M.G.s’ “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” battles Richie Havens’ “Here Comes the Sun.”

Listen to each pairing below, then vote for your favorite. For added sway, try to convince others to vote your way in the comments. Voting closes in 24 hours.

  1. Bowie is gonna win the top on for me, mostly because big daddy doesn’t even keep the most interesting part of “Lucy in the Sky” …the time signature change

  2. If we’re talking Richie Havens covering “Here Comes The Sun”, that’s not the version I’d have gone with. The live cover has and infinitely better feel, and none of that synth crap muddying up the mix.

    Jes’sayin.

  3. Easy choices today.

  4. oops. Pressed submit by accident. Bowie & Booker T.

  5. Bowie’s version is way too over-wrought for me, but I’m loving the absolutely insane rockabilly re-take of “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”!
Bowie’s got a lot of covers that are so much better than that under his belt (“My Death”, “White Light/White Heat”, “It’s Hard to Be a Saint in the City”, “It Ain’t Easy”, “Pablo Picasso”, etc.), so it seems a shame that one of his few mediocre ones gets the spotlight… but it’s his only officially released Beatles cover, so… *shrug*. I know Bowie’s probably going to win if just for the fact that he’s a big name contender, but I’m hoping for an upset and the insanely fun Big Daddy cover to move on.

As for the other pairing, Booker T. has it in the bag. A fantastic instrumental take on that dark blues masterpiece. Nothing against Ritchie Havens, but compared with that, his way too breezy take on “Here Comes the Sun” doesn’t hold a candle.

  6. I agree with Totz again; Bowie’s “Across the Universe” is way overdone. I love me some David Bowie, but that’s not him at his best. When you put that up against a really inventive take on “Lucy,” I think you gotta go with Big Daddy.

As for the second bracket, I don’t really care for either, actually, but Booker T wins out because: A) Richie’s production is terrible and B) he has the gall to tack “The End” onto his song, which he certainly doesn’t earn and is fairly nonsensical.

  7. No contest!
    Booker T is the champion!!!
