Yesterday’s winners: David Bowie, “Across the Universe” and Booker T. and the M.G.s, “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)”
For our fifth and sixth matches, we present some heavy hitters. First, it’s a Revolver battle when Chris Eckman of the Walkabouts pits his “Yellow Submarine” against the Black Keys’ “She Said She Said.” Then, Brad Mehldau Trio jazz through “She’s Leaving Home” for over nine minutes while indie pioneers Teenage Fanclub keep it short and sweet on “The Ballad of John and Yoko.”

Again, I think there’s only really one good cover in this bunch (Teenage Fanclub). But Black Keys have to beat Chris Eckman, whose cover is basically everything wrong with Bowie’s “Across the Universe” times 5.
The Black Keys may own their bracket, but Brad Mehldau Trio are definitely on top in theirs. No disrespect to Teenage Fanclub, but that’s an easy take with nothing new to say.
The other commenters covered basically the same ground as I was going to, so instead I’ll just mention a few covers I feel would’ve made great picks for the brackets:
– Rufus Wainwright – “Across the Universe”
– Aerosmith – “I’m Down” (yes, I know their “Come Together” is more famous, but for quality…)
– William Shatner – “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” (for the insanity of it)
– Paul Weller – “Sexy Sadie”
Actually, I only really read Liz’s comment thoroughly when I made that last comment, so I’ve got to say that Teenage Fanclub’s cover is one that I would honestly label “bad”. The mob vocals really fail the lyrics to the song, turning it from a humorously anguished tale of frustration and woe into… well, just a load of shit.
