This March, we pit 64 Beatles covers against each other in what we call Moptop Madness.

Yesterday’s winners: Coope, Boyes & Simpson, “Think for Yourself” and The Damned, “Help!”

Some unique matchups this morning. It’s the battle of the Bobs for match one as Bob Dylan’s live “Something” challenges Bobby McFerrin’s a cappella “Blackbird.” Then, for what will likely be the only time in the entire contest, two covers of the same song square off. Who does the better “Run for Your Life”: Cowboy Junkies or Spiers & Boden?

Listen to each pairing below, then vote for your favorite. For added sway, try to convince others to vote your way in the comments. Voting closes in 24 hours.

  1. Bobby McFerrin is really talented, but did he eat something that didn’t agree with him? That cover is not his finest work.

I really dig the backing vocals in the Cowboy Junkies cover, but I think Spiers & Boden’s merging of “Run For Your Life” with “Eleanor Rigby” stylings wins the day for me.

  2. Bob gets my vote evn though I think he took his interpretation inspiration from Shirley Bassey’s version. As for Bobby McFerrin – what the f***?

Cowboy Junkies – dirge and cannot compete with the wonderful English folkiness of Spiers & Boden.

  3. for a vocal version of blackbird kings singers kicks bobby’s hind end pretty hard. But his Version of Drive My Car is stellar.

and the 2 covers of the same song would have been a great way to start the brackets.

  4. Bobby McFerrin should’ve multi-tracked his vocals because the way it is on the recording just ruins the melody of the song. Dylan, on the other hand, keeps the emotion inherent in the lyrics to his friend’s song, even if he doesn’t match the original. Easy win for Bob over Bobby.

As for “Run for Your Life”, I prefer the dark & threatening version done by Cowboy Junkies that amps the menace of the lyrics up to 11. Spiers & Boden make it bouncy. Yes, bouncy. What the fuck?
