Weezers “Island in the Sun” is arguably a fun, poppy song about running away to a carefree fantasy place. Listening to the young Katie Costello’s delicate piano-version, like many stripped-down covers, proves the tune to be more cheerful than the lyrics.

Quoted as saying she wanted to make the 2001 alternative hit a bit “darker,” Costello does so by utilizing two keyboards and her voice alone. Paired with Costello’s gauzy voice, the lyrics become much less of a happy-go-lucky tune and more lonely and desperate.

  1. I don’t think this is meant to be happy song. It’s in a minor key for one thing.
