Banjo or Freakout is the one-man band of Alessio Natalizia, but don’t let the moniker fool you. There is very little, if any, banjo in his music. Rather, it consists of layered sounds from electric guitars and synthesizers, often leaning towards dream pop. However, on XMas 2010, his free collection of Christmas songs, he explores the “freakout” part of his name a little more fully.
Natalizia layers instrument upon instrument to make fantastic, complex soundscapes that certainly present different takes on the originals, including “Oh Holy Night”, Mariah Carey‘s “All I Want for Christmas,” and “Frosty the Snowman.” All of the complexity in the music frequently makes the tracks nearly unrecognizable from the originals. If you want a traditional Christmas album, you should probably look elsewhere. However, if you’re willing to explore some genuinely unique takes on songs you thought had already been done every way imaginable, then venture on over to Banjo or Freakout’s bandcamp page for a free download.
