Frazey Ford just released her debut album Obadiah, but she’s been on the scene for years as one-third of the Be Good Tanyas (shout out to Cover Lay Down for introducing me to those cover-happy Canucks). That band is now in “indefinite hiatus” – read: broken up until they get bored – but Ford’s solo work keeps the quirk-folk strong.

For the album she covered Bob Dylan’s “One More Cup of Coffee.” Her trademark warble fits the gypsy melody perfectly, making us wonder what she could do with the rest of Desire. “Romance in Durango”? “Isis”? Maybe stay away from “Hurricane” though.

One interesting note: The lyrics “Your daddy he’s an outlaw/And a wanderer by trade” may take on a personal meaning for Ford. Her father was an American draft dodger who hightailed it north when the war hit. In fact, the album cut “Lost Together” details her parents’ illegal encampment to the Great White North. It even features a guest singer: her mom.
