When Jay-Z wrote “99 Problems,” he never mentioned the problems he does have. Well New York-London-Bangkok musician Hugo is pretty clear on his in this new cover video. They mostly involve pig-people with knives (via Consequence of Sound).

The banjo-fied rap song is terrific, as banjo-fied rap songs often are. The video adds a strange new dimension though, creating some weird Nine Inch Nails/Saw vibe (but funnier). Mummy surgeons carve up patients. A claw sits molding in the fridge. An iguana does iguana stuff.

Seriously, what’s the deal with the iguana? “I needed to make a sort of diva demand,” Hugo said. “[I told the crew,] ‘I’m gonna have a fucking iguana and nothing you say or do is going to change that.’”

Watch the video below, then go to Consequence of Sound to read the whole interview, including the tale of Jay’s super-enthusiastic endorsement (“Yeah, go ahead”). Also check out Hugo’s MySpace for a terrific “Paparazzi”/”Don’t Stop Beliving” mashup.

  1. The myspace page you link to is not the same “99 Problems” Hugo and he definitely had nothing to do with that mash up. Here’s the right Hugo’s myspace http://www.myspace.com/hugoofficial

  2. Whoops! Thanks for the heads up BK. Fixed.
