I have a higher tolerance for pop covers than most people, but I figured Justin Bieber’s megahit “Baby” was just too awful to ever be listenable. I was wrong. Utah-based new wavers give the song a doo-wop soul shine, going so far as to mix in a little “Stand By Me.” And it works!

The band played the tune for Billboard’s “Mashup Mondays” series and made no secret of the reasoning behind the choice. “We might as well cover something people are enjoying right now,” mohawked frontman Tyler Glenn says at video’s end. This mentality generally leads to awful, terrible covers, but the quintet bucked the trend. I’m in shock that I am enjoying “Baby” in any form, but there’s no denying this energy. 1. It’s amazing what you can do with four chords. It’s pop music. When Justin Bieber sings it, it’s awful (mostly cause of the sonic mess that’s called the song’s ‘production’). When these guys do it, old school, it’s not half bad. The song itself isn’t much of anything. It’s all about how you present it.

  2. That was SO much better than Justin Bieber’s!! Either way, if you dig Neon Trees, give New Politics a spin and you might love them – check out their video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxnEIbAsIio&feature=player_embedded

  3. Yes! When they break out into Stand By Me I break out into happy. Sweet.
