Let’s put a new coat of paint on this lonesome old town
Set ‘em up, we’ll be knockin’ em down
You wear a dress, baby, and I’ll wear a tie
We’ll laugh at that old bloodshot moon in that burgundy sky.
- Tom Waits

Dear Reader,

Welcome to the new site! This baby has been a long time coming. Poke around; make yourself at home. I think you’ll find it slicker, faster and easier to navigate.

All the old posts have been transferred over, but they’ve kept the same basic URL. Just delete the “.blogspot” from any old link and it’ll work. Update your bookmarks; tell your friends.

The new layout is only the beginning though. As we transition, we’re upgrading our approach. The old system of posting one chunk of songs a week has grown clunky and inefficient. So from now on you’ll see a more fluid format, with posts every day. We’re talking articles, news, downloads, videos, streams, features, blurbs, contests and a whole lot of exclusives. Follow the site via RSS/Twitter/Facebook/MySpace/email newsletter to stay up to speed.

As we get rolling, I want to hear from you. Voice your thoughts on the new look. Suggest a new feature or series. Tell us what you want to carry over from the old page (and what you’d just as soon leave behind). The more feedback you give, the better the site becomes.

Today begins a whole new chapter in the life of Cover Me. We kick things off next Tuesday with a very exciting exclusive. See you then.

- Ray

Each week Shuffle Sundays features a cover chosen at random. The songs will usually be good, occasionally be bad, always be interesting. All downloads will only be available for one week, so get them while you can.

Neutral Milk Hotel’s Jeff Mangum is indie rock’s J.D. Salinger.  His album In the Aeroplane Over the Sea resonated with young people on a deeply personal level, leading to the high school “It changed my life” claims usually reserved for Catcher in the Rye.

Cover Commissions is a monthly series in which a featured artist covers a reader-selected song for this blog. Any artists interested in participating, email me.

Christina Cone comes to us by way of Brooklyn, where she’s steadily developing a following.  The whole girl-on-piano thing inevitably leads to Norah Jones comparisons, but if you’ve got to go there Regina Spektor makes a better reference point.  Cone’s poppy melodies push her well beyond jazz-lite torch songs while her occasional vocal riffing sounds straight out of Spektor’s “Fidelity.”

Dio has rocked for a long long time…

As you’ve probably heard, legendary metal singer Ronnie James Dio died of stomach cancer yesterday.  The man fronted a an impressive list of heavy metal bands, popularized the devil’s horns and inspired the Tenacious D song from which the above line comes (which he apparently took in good humor).  He rose to superstardom as Ozzy Osbourne’s replacement in Black Sabbath, so today we take a look at the Godfathers of Metal.  Technically Dio only sang one of the songs covered here, but is it our fault that “T.V. Crimes” didn’t have quite the impact of “Paranoid”?

This past week Late Night with Jimmy Fallon celebrated the thirtieth anniversary of Exile on Main St. with a week of covers.  The festivities included Green Day, Sheryl Crow and Taj Mahal (who schooled the young’uns).  The week wrapped up with Phish, the obvious choice since just last Halloween they performed all of Exile live.  They kept it at five minutes for late night though, rambling through “Loving Cup.”

Number-one hits get all the glory, but what about the runners-up, the second-best, the popular-but-not-quite-popular-enough?  You might be surprised what classic singles stalled at #2, and what forgotten yesterhits kept them from the top.  Cover Me salutes the silver medalists as a reminder to the kids: winning isn’t everything.  As long as you come in second.
